Conference Scope and Topics > Overview of Scope & Topics

79th RILEM Annual Week & ICONS 2025 International Conference on Advances in Engineering and Technology for Sustainable Development

General themes of the ICONS 2025 Conference

The conference will aim to present and discuss the recent advances in materials and structures research to meet the great challenges of the 21st century and beyond to:

  • Enable sustainable, safe, and durable construction (new and existing buildings and strategic infrastructures);
  • Promote the circular construction / economy;
  • Improve the energy efficiency of construction;
  • Favour the quality and comfort of building (indoor air quality and comfort).

All these topics will be considered from the material’s perspective, but also from the structure's perspective.

A special focus will be put on the worldwide practices and rationale to meet these goals.

The conference will cover all the topics in the scope of ICONS 2025 scientific activities, and will include the following:

For Sustainable Performance of Eco-Materials and Structures:

  • Hydration and microstructure characterization
  • Eco-friendly and innovative building materials, i.e., cementitious materials, ceramic, glass, composite, paints
  • 3D printing concrete
  • Resource efficiency (recycling)
  • Environmental and sustainability assessment of construction materials, systems, and structure
  • Long-term performance of building materials (durability and Service life prediction)
  • Constitutive response and durability of eco-materials
  • Deterioration in tropical and marine conditions
  • Nondestructive inspection, monitoring
  • Repair, retrofitting and restoration
  • Performance of structures under extreme conditions and climate changes

For Digitalization of Eco-Materials and Structures:

  • Data analytic and artificial intelligence approaches
  • Modelling of structures using eco-materials
  • AI and big data

For Sound Resource Management of Eco-Materials and Structures:

  • BIM, applied to circular construction management
  • Circular economy in the Built Environment
  • Building codes and standards for sustainable construction
  • Cementitious materials (conventional and low-CO2 binders), alkali-activated materials and geopolymers, new binders (sulfur, magnesium, etc.), materials for energy storage Bricks, stone, masonry, mortars, grouts
  • Bio-based materials, earth construction (special session organised)
  • Bituminous materials (special session organised)
